I played on a number of kits before finally finding a sound I could call my own. In March of 2000, I got my Yamaha Maple Custom set, and I’ve been thrilled with it. The Vintage finish coupled with the vintage hoops really warm up the maple shells. These are some serious drums!
I also play Zildjian cymbals exclusively. There are some great cymbals out there made by the other companies, but I’ve never had any problems with Zildjians. They sound great live or in the studio, and give me a consistent sound along the full dynamic spectrum. Very musical.
For the most part, I use Remo drum heads, although lately I’ve been getting into Aquarians for the snare drums. My roommate turned me on to Aquarian, and I like the way they combine musicality with durability. The Remo heads keep my toms nice and punchy though, so I’m going to stick with them for a while.
Speaking of sticks, I use mostly Vic Firth 5As. If it’s a heavy rock gig, or if I’m playing on electric drums, I’ll use the Firth Jack DeJohnette model. For light jazz settings, the Firth Peter Erskine “blue” stick works quite nicely. I also use the Zildjian Russ Miller stick on occasion.
